Musco Center presents:
SITI Company: The Medium Concept/Direction by Anne Bogart
THIS EVENT IS IN THE PAST
Saturday, September 17, 2022 | 7:30 p.m.
Founded by theatre legends Tadashi Suzuki and Anne Bogart, the Saratoga International Theater Institute revitalized and redefined contemporary theater. In its farewell tour, the company, under Bogart’s direction, revisits The Medium’s musings on technology. The production, hailed by Variety as “some of the most provocative and exciting theater on any American stage,” is even more piercingly accurate three decades later. Drawing from the writings of early media theorist Marshall McLuhan, and portrayed through robotic physicality, The Medium makes us question our screens and ourselves.
A meditation on technology that’s more resonant now than when it premiered in 1993, The Medium draws heavily on the writings of pioneering media theorist Marshall McLuhan, coiner of the phrases “the medium is the message” and “global village” to describe his visions of our interconnected future. Following recent sold-out engagements in Pittsburgh, Hanover, and at BAM in Brooklyn, The Medium makes its final stop in California right here at Musco Center.
True to the company's style, the piece combines myriad influences: 1920s American Expressionism, modern dance, Japanese avant-garde theater, and others with the purpose of reflecting McLuhan's mixed predictions. Staged with minimalist potency and maximal physicality by Bogart and the astonishing artists of SITI Company, The Medium asks: Who are we—and what are we becoming—in the flickering light of our own devices?
Join us for a conversation with SITI co-founder, director, and author Anne Bogart after the performance.

About SITI Company
SITI Company is an ensemble-based theater company whose three ongoing components are the creation of new work, the training of theater artists, and a commitment to crossing boundaries. SITI was founded in 1992 by Anne Bogart, Tadashi Suzuki, and a group of like-minded artists to redefine and revitalize contemporary theater in the United States through an emphasis on international cultural exchange and collaboration.
They are leaders in the Suzuki and Viewpoints Methods of actor training and each year welcome over 100 artists into their NYC studio and meet many more as they travel domestically and internationally to teach workshops in these methods. SITI Company is committed to providing a space where the interaction of art, artists, audiences, and ideas inspire the possibility of change, optimism, and hope. Building on the bedrock of ensemble, they believe that through the practice of collaboration, a group of artists working together over time can have a significant impact on both contemporary theater and the world at large.
